What began as a quiet dream has grown into one of Richardson’s most beloved gathering places.

When Maricsa Trejo envisioned opening her own bakery, the goal was never just to sell pastries. She imagined a space that felt safe, welcoming, and deeply rooted in care, a place where people from every walk of life could gather, work, and feel at home. That vision became La Casita Bakeshop, a name that quite literally means “little home,” and a concept that has shaped every chapter of its story.
La Casita’s Richardson location at 580 W. Arapaho Rd is where it all began. Initially open just one day a week, the bakery quickly captured the attention, and the hearts, of the community. Long lines formed early on, with customers willing to wait patiently for thoughtfully made breads and pastries that often sold out by mid-afternoon. That early enthusiasm transformed La Casita from a weekend pop-up into a flagship location and a cornerstone of Richardson’s local food scene that is now open 5 days a week, serving breakfast and lunch to locals and visitors, alike.

For Maricsa and her husband, co-owner Alex Henderson, hospitality has always been at the heart of La Casita. Maricsa grew up surrounded by family and friends who bonded through shared meals and time spent together. Pairing that with Alex’s love for hosting, La Casita naturally shaped into a cafe that welcomed strangers and made them feel like neighbors.
That sense of belonging extends behind the counter as well. La Casita is powered by a diverse and collaborative team of bakers, chefs, baristas, servers, managers, and behind-the-scenes staff who all contribute to the experience. Menu ideas are shared, refined, and celebrated together, allowing creativity to flourish while staying true to the bakery’s roots.

Those roots are reflected in the flavors themselves. La Casita’s menu weaves together personal history and culinary exploration, drawing inspiration from the traditional Mexican breads and drinks Maricsa grew up with, alongside techniques and recipes she developed during her time working in New York City. Monthly pastry menus keep offerings fresh and seasonal, while familiar favorites remain constants for longtime guests.
For first-time visitors, the cinnamon rolls, cruffins, and sourdough bread have become something of a rite of passage – fan favorites with stories behind every swirl and fold. Savory brunch items like the Benedict or the Cubano, inspired by Maricsa’s father’s favorite sandwich, have earned their own devoted following. Each dish carries intention, memory, and a sense of care that extends beyond the plate.

Don’t just take our word for it. Over the years, La Casita Bakeshop has been recognized across North Texas and beyond for its standout pastries, brunch offerings, and community-driven approach. The bakery has been named a Best Bakery and Best Brunch Spot finalist by regional publications including Dallas Observer and CultureMap Dallas, and has even been nominated for multiple James Beard Awards, earning a loyal following well beyond Richardson city limits. La Casita has also been featured on local and national television, with appearances on Good Morning Texas and Texas Today, where Maricsa shared both her baking process and the heart behind the business, and popular competition shows like Food Network’s Chopped, and Fox’s Next Level Baker with Gordon Ramsey. While these accolades and media moments are meaningful, Maricsa is quick to point out that they ultimately reflect the continued support of the Richardson community that has championed La Casita since its earliest days.

Over the years, Maricsa and Alex have been humbled by gestures both big and small, encouragement from regulars, gifts from neighboring businesses, and a steady stream of familiar faces who return week after week; Relationships built on trust, pride, and a shared love for community.
One memory that stands out for Maricsa involves a customer who was undergoing cancer treatment and came in to purchase lunch for hospital staff members, a simple but powerful act of generosity. Recently, he returned to the Richardson location, where Maricsa was able to personally thank him with a box of Christmas cookies. Moments like that, she says, affirm why she does what she does.

Since its early days, La Casita has evolved in visible ways: expanded hours, refined menus, wholesale clients, and multiple locations throughout DFW. But their core values remain unchanged – creating the best bakery possible while preserving the sense of warmth that first drew people through the door.
Looking ahead, Maricsa is most excited about continuing to experiment with new menus, welcoming new regulars, and watching Richardson grow alongside its small businesses. And if guests leave and tell their friends just one thing, she hopes it is this, that La Casita is their favorite brunch spot, not only because of the food, but because of the people.
