Creativity Blooms at Richardson’s Cottonwood Art Festival
Twice a year, in May and October, something truly special blooms in Richardson’s Cottonwood Park. Not wildflowers, but creativity. The Cottonwood Art Festival is a beloved North Texas tradition that’s brought art, music, and community spirit together for over 50 years. If you haven’t experienced it yet, you’re in for an unforgettable weekend.
Whether you’re an art lover, a curious explorer, or just looking for a great way to spend the weekend outdoors – here’s everything you need to know about Cottonwood Art Festival and why you won’t want to miss it!

What Is Cottonwood Art Festival?
The Cottonwood Art Festival is a juried fine arts show featuring over 200 artists from around the country. What does “juried” mean? It means every artist you see has been carefully selected by a panel of experts, so you’re guaranteed to see some of the finest, most imaginative work in the country.
The open-air setting in beautiful Cottonwood Park turns the whole space into a gallery under the trees. You’ll find original paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glasswork, jewelry, mixed media, photography, and more. And the best part? You can meet the artists themselves, hear the stories behind the pieces, and take home something truly one-of-a-kind.

More Than Just Art
While the art is the star of the show, Cottonwood Art Festival is much more than just browsing beautiful booths:
- Live Music All Weekend: Two stages host local bands and performers throughout the festival. Expect a mix of acoustic sets, energetic rock, and everything in between. It’s the perfect soundtrack to your day of exploring.
- Craft Food & Local Flavor: From gourmet tacos and BBQ, to funnel cakes and fresh lemonade, the festival is a foodie’s delight. Grab a bite and relax in the beer garden while soaking up the sounds of live music.
- Family-Friendly Fun: Bringing the kids? They’ll love the ArtStop Children’s Area, where little artists can create their own masterpieces through painting, pottery, and more hands-on activities designed just for them.
- Merch with a Mission: Stop by the merch booth for limited-edition gear created by festival artists – a great way to support the arts and take home a creative souvenir.

A Festival with Deep Roots
Held in scenic Cottonwood Park, the festival traces its roots back to 1969 when it began as a small gathering of local artists. Over the decades, it’s grown into one of the top fine art festivals in the country, attracting both renowned artists and enthusiastic crowds. Despite its national reputation, Cottonwood still holds onto its small-town charm and welcoming atmosphere, which is one of many reasons people return year after year.
